WTF is RUO?

"RUO" Peptides stands for Research Use Only Peptides.

Peptides themselves are tiny chains of amino acids, basically little biological messengers that can tell cells to do certain things. Think of amino acids as LEGO pieces, peptides as small LEGO creations, and proteins as the giant LEGO Death Star.

Your body naturally makes thousands of peptides involved in things like hormones, metabolism, appetite, skin, inflammation, and tissue repair.

RUO peptides are peptides sold specifically for laboratory research rather than for human use in a doctor’s office. So when a vial says “Research Use Only,” it is essentially saying: “Hello, I am a science experiment, not an FDA-appoved, doctor-prescribed medication.” Aka take at your own risk.

And depending on who you ask, getting access to most peptides is especially difficult in the US for a variety of reasons, many of which might sound like conspiracy theories. Not only do you need to find a trusted source that tests their peptides for sterility, toxins, and other stuff, but you also need to then buy needles, add water into the vials, measure out the dosing, and do it all without any consistent information or any one person willing to say THIS IS HOW YOU DO THIS because then they’re risking pissing off the big guys at the tippy top who want to keep us fat, sick, tired, and nonthreatening. Oops, my conspiracy theorist is showing…

How can they help me?

The answer is slightly annoying but scientifically correct: it completely depends on you and on the peptide.

Asking “What can peptides do for me?” is like asking “What can an iPhone do for me?” Um, lots of stuff. But it depends on what apps you have, what you want to use it for, etc.

Likewise, different peptides are being studied for completely different effects such as metabolism, appetite, tissue repair, skin elasticity and collagen production, muscle repair and growth signaling, inflammation, hormone pathways, and even cognition.

Some peptide-based therapies have excellent human evidence and are legitimate medicines; others have promising but early research; and some popular internet peptides have very limited human evidence. Most have been studied and used across the world for decades, some are up and coming.

So the important question isn't really “Should I take peptides?” It's “Which specific peptide, for what specific goal, and what evidence do we actually have that it works and is safe?”

Why are they so popular all of the sudden?

Peptides sound a little like science fiction. But they’re not fiction, they’re very very real.

It all started after celebrities started losing tons of weight on branded GLPs (like Ozzy) a few years ago. Everyone got jealous and wanted them too. This introduced normies to peptides, because GLPs are peptides!

When sh*t hit the fan and supply chains couldn’t keep up with a massive wave of demand, the FDA gave compounding pharmacies permission to make these drugs so people could keep getting their fix while China upped it’s game and cranked up their production volumes. This changed the game because now people could buy these things through affordable, accessible telehealth platforms and have it delivered to their doors for 1/10th the price big pharma was selling it for. Can’t put that cat back in the bag…

With millions of people finally injection at home with vials and needles, the doors blew open and people of all walks of life started asking “well, what else can I stick in me?!”

And so it began… the normie peptide craze...

Now, thanks to social media, podcasts, etc., people have access to information in ways they never did before, including everyone’s stories about how “peptides changed my life.”

Add influencers, longevity clinics, biohackers, celebrities, podcasts, and dramatic before-and-after stories, and suddenly peptides are everywhere.

But researchers have been studying different peptides for everything from metabolism and muscle to skin, healing, inflammation, hormones, and aging for decades and decades... Not to mention, they’ve literally been around since the dawn of humanity (because peptides aka amino acid chains are already in us!).

So they’re definitely not new news.

What are stacks and cycles?

A peptidestack” simply means using multiple peptides together, usually because each targets a different biological pathway or goal. Think of it like assembling a team where everyone has as a task. Some people do their tasks on their own because they’re great ICs, while others might work together to get the job done better and faster.

Cycling” means using a peptide for a period of time, taking a break, and potentially starting again later. Your body loves balance (called homeostasis), so continually pushing certain biological signals can sometimes cause the body to adapt or change its response. It’s critical to cycle peptides so your body doesn’t become desensitized and mess up your homeostasis.
